APSDA
Asia Pacific Space Designers Association
The Asia Pacific Space Designers Association
(APSDA) was founded by the Chinese Society of Interior Designers
(CSID), the Japanese Society of Commercial Designers (CSID),
the Japanese Society of Commercial Designers (JCD) and Korean
Society of Interior Designers (KOSID) in 1989 in Taipei, Taiwan,
CSID of Taiwan, JCD OF Japan and KOSID of Korea had previously
held regular annual meeting since 1987. In 1989, other Asian
Countries were invited as observers in their congress and
the congress was called "Asia Pacific Space Designers
Congress". It was attended by the Asian Countries in
the Asia Pacific Region among others, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Australia.
At the fourth meeting in Tokyo, the three countries decided
to expand the meeting into an Asia Pacific Regional Conference.
To accelerate the process of formation of a regional body
representing design interest, in March 1991, the first Preliminary
Meeting between CSID, JCD and KOSID delegates culminating
in the establishment of APSDA and the eventual Inaugural Assembly
in Seoul.
The Inaugural Assembly and Congress of the Asia Pacific Designers
Association took place at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul,
Korea on 21st October 1991. Ten organisations from nine countries
covering the Asia Pacific region were invited to participate
in the event. The participants were CSID of Taiwan, JCD of
Japan and KOSID of Korea who are the founding members, along
with PIID of the Philippines, DIA of Australia, HIID of Indonesia,
MSID of Malaysia as full Members and JCD of Japan, TIDA of
Thailand and IDA of Hong Kong soon became full members.
The Congress holds their meetings bi annually. Since the Fukuoka
Congress in 1996, founders agreed to have the congress outside
the founding members 'countries' for the first time. MSID
of Malaysia during En. Bakar Abrahim's presidency had won
the honor to host this biennial congress, this being the first
time in APSDA's 10 year history, that a country outside the
founding member's countries hosted the 10th Anniversary of
APSDA in 1998. More than 500 delegates and students attended
the APSDA in 1998. More than 500 delegates and students attended
the APSDA Congress in Shah Alam which also brought in internationally
renown speakers from all over the world. The APSDA 2000 Congress
was hosted by HIID of Indonesia in BALI Indonesia. The APSDA
2002 Congress will be held in Manila, Philippines hosted by
PIID.
